3,000 People Turn Out for Camp Fair

The best Fair ever! Four short words summarize Lexington Family Magazine’s 8th Annual Summer Camps & Activities Fair, which set attendance records on April 10 at Lexington Catholic High School.

Six months of planning, 60 informative booths, five fabulous live performances, 18 writing contest winners, two giant inflatable games and 3,000 attendees can be boiled down to that one phrase -- “The best Fair ever!”

When we opened the doors at 10 a.m. 275 people already were in line to be one of the first 25 families who received a free family friendly DVD.

As Mom and Dad browsed the booths, they met camp directors and soccer coaches, dance teachers and music instructors, doctors and dentists, a vision care specialist and chiropractors, vacation bible school and preschool teachers.

Eva Miller, parent of two girls and director of a family resource center in Clark County, was amazed at how much information was available at the Fair.

“In my job, parents always ask me what is available for their kids in the summer,” she said.

While parents were busy talking to camp directors at the Fair, the kids were busy having fun!

They climbed, slid and played in the two giant inflatables, they met the Chick-fil-A cow, three chicks, two rabbits and a dog, made edible volcanoes, got their hair, face and nails painted, tried on princess dresses, tossed bean bags, manipulated a robotic crane, decorated cookies, climbed through tunnels, made a crown, hula hooped, jump roped, danced and even tried to break a plastic block with their bare hands.

Yeah, it was a blast!

And I haven’t even told you about the performances yet. Kiddie Kapers kicked things off with a series of rocking dance numbers from their award-winning teams, followed by more rockin’ shows from the Lexington Music Academy, Legacy Gymnastics, Images Model and Talent Agency and Lexington TaeKwonDo.

And don’t forget the prizes! Every half hour, we gave away something -- a gorgeous bunk bed from Baby’s Room and Kids Too, the newest American Girl doll, Breyer horses, games, books, DVDs, CDs, free birthday parties, gift certificates, spa services and so much more.

Some camps -- Alpha Farm, for example -- gave away a free week of camp.
By 2 p.m. nearly 3,000 people had streamed in the doors, gathered bags full of information and then headed home with their happy and exhausted kids.
I sure hope you didn’t miss it. But if you did, be sure to check out our Virtual Camp Fair at our web site at www.lexingtonfamily.com and mark your calendars now – next year’s Fair will be Saturday, April 16, 2011.
