Milward to Host Free Grief Support Group Meetings

Milward Funeral Directors is hosting free support group meetings for those who have experienced a loss on the third Tuesday of every month through October of this year at 1509 Trent Boulevard. The first session is scheduled for Feb. 16, at 6:30 p.m.

The meetings offer support and encouragement, while helping participants deal with grief through a group study of the book “Understanding Your Grief: Ten Essential Touchstones” by Dr. Alan WolfeIt.

Each session will provide opportunities for voluntary journaling and sharing. Leading the sessions will be Lori Casey, a registered nurse, associate pastor at St. Matthews Baptist church in Louisville. She is also a board certified chaplain on the Palliative Care Team at Baptist Health Lexington.

Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and are scheduled for the following dates: March 15, April 19, May 17, June 21, July 19, Aug. 16, Sept. 20 and Oct. 18. All are welcome to stay after the meeting for complimentary refreshments.

Dear Family Members and Friends:

Milward Funeral Directors invites you to our monthly grief support group meetings at no cost or obligation.  These meetings offer loving support and encouragement in an informal setting.  Friends and family members, along with neighbors or fellow church members who have experienced a loss are encouraged to attend with you.  You may bring personal mementos to share with the group, and you are welcome to join us for refreshments afterwards.

We will be studying Dr. Alan Wolfelt’s book entitled,  Understanding Your Grief:  Ten Essential Touchstones.   Each session will provide opportunities for voluntary sharing and journaling, and will be conducted by Lori Casey, a registered nurse and  a former flight nurse during Desert Storm.  She married a fighter pilot who now flies for Delta Airlines, and they have two terrific adult children who continue to live in Atlanta.   She worked as a nurse near Atlanta,  until moving to Kentucky in 2004 to attend  Asbury Theological Seminary .  She is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church  and was  an associate pastor at St. Matthews in Louisville for several years.  For the last five years Lori has been delighted to be the board certified chaplain on the Palliative Care Team at Baptist Health Lexington with a specialty board certification in hospice-palliative chaplaincy.

Participants shared the following personal reflections during past grief support groups meetings offered by Milward Funeral Directors:

“Realizing that I was not alone and knowing others were experiencing similar feelings and knowing that         my mourning was ok and could actually have a positive value in the healing                                                                                                                                                process.”  Carleen Ott

“It became a meeting I looked forward to attending.  I found it to be comforting.”  Mary Werner

“I appreciate the willingness to listen to each other—the acceptance shown to all—the kindness       and                         friendliness.  This bond among the brokenhearted was unique.  I wonder if succeeding groups will be as                 blessed by this experience as I was.”  Nansara Baker
