Over 6.98 Million Minutes of Healthy Activity Logged In The Fit Family Challenge

CHARLOTTE, NC (June 20, 2016) – More than 21,000 family participants from Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia have collectively logged nearly 7 million minutes of activity so far in the Fit Family Challenge.

The free 8-week program encourages families with the help of local parenting magazine partners, to get fit and to adopt healthy habits with free online tools, free local fitness classes and weekly prize incentives. “We are excited to be a part of the Fit Family Challenge in our community,” says John Lynch of Lexington Family Magazine, “because it is a fun and healthy way for families to spend time together.”

The Fit Family Challenge encourages families to participate in physical activity for at least 150 minutes per week. Once registered, participants track minutes to earn points, and are entered in a weekly drawing for prizes, including a grand prize vacation package to Universal Orlando Resort. More than 90 prizes have been awarded so far. Participants can earn points for healthy habits like drinking more water, trying a free fitness class (at participating locations), and attending official Fit Family Challenge events.

“The U.S. Surgeon General report recommends adults aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity on most or all days of the week to the reduce risk of chronic disease,” explains Susan Johnson, Director of Health Promotion at Medical University of South Carolina. “Adopting healthy new behaviors can be difficult, and studies suggest that it takes about two months for a new behavior to “stick.” So, participating in the Fit Family Challenge is a great way to turn regular physical activity into a family habit!”

“We are excited about the engagement and enthusiasm so far. This year, the Fit Family Challenge has expanded into five states with the generous support of our partners, Coca-Cola Consolidated and CVS, who have helped us spread awareness about the importance of active healthy lifestyles. From the City of Florence, South Carolina to Roanoke Valley, Virginia, we see healthy habits and weekly engagement increasing,” says Eve White, Director of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships at Morris Media Network. “Tracking minutes and healthy habits as a family is fun and rewarding. The more active you are, the more chances you have to win.”

The Challenge runs through June 26, 2016. To register and for official rules and regulations visit www.myfitfamilychallenge.com.
