Lexington Latch On Scheduled for Aug. 6
Lexington will once again try to break a world record by participating in the Global Big Latch On, on Saturday, Aug. 6 at Pleasant Ridge Park.
The Big Latch On is a world-wide event where local communities come together to promote and support breastfeeding. In 2015, 28 countries hosted Latch On events at 654 individual locations.
Mindful Moms of the Bluegrass will host the Lexington Latch On for the 3rd year. Andrea Malji, a Mindful Moms administrator, said last year’s event saw a boost in attendance and she hopes to grow the numbers even more for 2016.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. with games, children’s activities, food and prize giveaways. Local organizations, including the Health Department, will be on-site with information and resources for breastfeeding help and education.
At 10:30 a.m., moms are invited to nurse their children and attempt to break the record for number of children breastfeeding simultaneously. The event is open to the community and Malji encourages partners to attend.
“Breastfeeding is a family event,” she said. “You need the support of a family because the more people you have supporting you, the more likely you are to continue breastfeeding.”
Immediately following the Latch On will be a family walk guided by Hike It Baby Lexington. The walk will be along the trail right behind the park.
Malji hopes the event will educate the community about the benefits of breastfeeding while creating a bond between families.
“When you can meet face-to-face, it just helps people be nicer to one another,” she said. “Last year people talked about how much fun they had and that they felt they were part of a community.”
