Healthy Treats During Pregnancy
Dessert often tops the list of pregnancy cravings, but your prenatal diet emphasizes protein and fiber over sugar and fat.
Here are some options for healthy treats that will still satisfy a sweet tooth.
If you’re craving popsicles:
Make your own fruit pops. Store bought popsicles are loaded with sugar and artificial dyes. Blend your
favorite fruit combos with some Greek yogurt, then freeze in ice-pop molds.
If you’re craving cake:
Angel food cake is a perfect dessert option when craving cake. It’s light, airy and pairs well with sweet add-ons. Throw some berries and a small dollop of whipped cream on top.
If you’re craving ice cream:
Opt for frozen yogurt. The texture is different, but you’re getting the protein and calcium without the fat. You can top it with chocolate sauce, chopped nuts or fruit.
If you’re craving cookies:
Try modifying an oatmeal cookie recipe to include your favorite flavors (chocolate chips, nuts, etc;) The oatmeal adds a fiber boost to the sweetness of the cookie dough.
If you’re craving chocolate:
Try chocolate-covered nuts or chocolate-dipped fruit. Dark chocolate has its own health benefits but a filling like peanuts or strawberries are hands down better for you than caramel or nougat.
