Incorporating “Hygge” Into Daily Life
In the darkness there are candles in the windows. One of the most stirring sights during the holidays, they invite us to a sense of warmth and peace, connecting years past to the present season, bringing hope of happiness and well-being.
This basic longing can be overly sentimentalized, but the desires to be warm and safe and know that we belong are foundational human needs. How can the candles in the windows inspire us this year to be both givers and receivers of these gifts?
Perhaps the Danish concept of hygge (pronounced “hue-gah”) can offer a simple starting point. Thomsen Brits, author of a book about hygge, calls it “a practical way of creating sanctuary in the middle of very real life.”
Hygge is difficult to define, and it can be used as a noun, verb or adjective. The closest word in English is “cozy.” It is an atmosphere, and it can be created by slowing down and being purposeful in either awareness of its presence or in its creation.
All you need is the intention to feel warm and cozy. Here’s how:
- Look at routines you already have (breakfast, coffee, game night)
- Add a candle or a host of candles
- Light a fire or pull up The Yule Log
- Set aside an evening, or a weekend morning or afternoon
- Add blankets, warm socks, pajamas
- Look for spontaneous opportunities for hygge
If you need a few suggestions:
- Play a board game or cards together.
- Look through old photographs and pictures
- Read together, out loud or each person with their own book
- Bake a cake or some cookies
- Tell stories and “remember when….”
- Share a warm drink: hot chocolate, apple cider, tea or coffee
One final thought: wouldn’t it be nice to find warm-weather ways to hygge as well?
