Sayre School hosts 35th History Symposium

Sayre School’s 35th F. Kevin Simon History Symposium for secondary history and social studies teachers featured a timely theme: Women and the Vote: The Centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment.

The event on Feb. 22 at Sayre featured speakers Melanie Goan, University of Kentucky; Renee Laegreid, University of Wyoming; and Sharon Harley, University of Maryland.

Harley, an Associate Professor of African American Studies at Maryland, was particularly impressed with the event.

“I could never have anticipated how participating in the 35th F. Kevin Simon History Symposium at Sayre School would enlighten and inspire me but it did,” she said.

“It was an impressive symposium for history teachers who so richly deserve it. If it has not already occurred, I hope Sayre will receive statewide, even national recognition, for this stellar symposium.”

In 2002 the symposium was named in memory and honor of its founder and director, F. Kevin Simon, a long-time history teacher at the school.

“Imagine a professional development experience that intertwines scholarly expertise, collegiality and intellectual stimulation all at no cost to the participants,” Head of School Stephen Manella said.

“That is Sayre’s F. Kevin Simon Symposium, and for nearly three decades secondary level history teachers from Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana have benefited from this unique program.”
