When volleyball star Taylor Trammell entered middle school, she wanted to keep playing soccer and try out for the dance team… until her cousin suggested they try volleyball.
Turns out, Taylor, now a senior at Henry Clay High, is a natural.
Two years after she first played volleyball, Taylor played as an eighth grader on the Henry Clay High team that won the Region and advanced to the State tournament.
That’s also when Taylor received her first college recruiting letters.
After starting at Henry Clay for five years – and growing to 6 feet, 2 inches tall – Taylor will play next year at Purdue on a full volleyball scholarship.
Taylor has been an All-City first-team selection for three straight years and played on the Henry Clay team that reached the State final in 2016.
As a senior, she is an All-State selection by the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Assn., while leading the Blue Devils back to the State tournament.
She also plays for Lexington United Volleyball, a club team. Two years ago she was invited to practice with the U.S. youth team at the Olympic training facility in Colorado.
A ferocious competitor, Taylor combines a team-first attitude with a robust competitive spirit.
“I like to rise to the occasion and I will do everything in my power to help my teammates,” she said.
Her mother, Kimberly, calls her a monster at the net.
“She can dominate at the net as a blocker and hitter,” she said. “I call her my gentle giant because she can be fierce on the court and otherwise she is creative and artsy.”
An Academic All-State selection, Taylor is also an award-winning painter.
She started designing when she and her grandmother watched Project Runway together and Taylor starting sewing clothes that she had designed.
By high school, her creativity led her to painting where she works in oils and acrylics to create landscapes and portraits.
Her portrait of author Rupi Kaur was honored by Eastern Kentucky University. Another painting appeared in the Fayette County schools calendar.
She has a 4.6 weighted GPA and scored 27 on the science portion of the ACT. She hopes to major in pre-med at Purdue.
Taylor is a mentor for elementary school students in Girls Guiding Girls and also mentors high school minority students as part of the Entering Advanced Placement program.
She’s a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and at Vineyard Community Church. She also works at the YMCA.
“She is very organized and an excellent time manager,” her mother said. “Every year she picks out a new planner to keep track of all that she does.”
