Fayette County Public Schools – ‘FamU’ Helps Parents Build Student Success

In the Fayette County Public Schools, families are our partners in all that we do and we are committed to working collaboratively with you to ensure the success of every student.

One of our many outreach efforts is an exciting program we call Family University: Guiding Families from Cradle to Career, or “FamU” for short.

Family University is a series of Saturday learning opportunities we offer several times a year for parents and other caregivers to actively foster student success.

The day is structured to provide classes, workshops and other events that familiarize people not only with the schools, but also with community resources.

When we founded Family University a year ago, our goal was to provide another avenue to empower families to be more fully engaged in their children’s education, and to help them understand more about our schools and school district offerings.

Since then, hundreds of families have participated. Each FamU event is unique, but one thing each of them has in common is that there’s something for everyone!

Sessions for Parents and Guardians

Explore opportunities to support student learning at home. Topics can include School Readiness, Early Literacy Practices, Issues and Trends Affecting Youth, New Curriculum Programs in FCPS, Services for English Learners, College and Career Readiness, and more!

Sessions for Youth

These fun and enriching activities for ages 4-18 focus on leadership, STEM, arts, and college and career readiness.

Resource Fairs

FCPS and community partners highlight resources that support families and provide services to support academic achievement outside the classroom.

In March, FCPS Family University will partner with Urban League of Lexington, the YMCA of Central Kentucky Black Achievers Program and community partners to host the annual Lifting & Impacting Futures Today (LIFT) Conference.

Founded in 2003 to help diverse students understand how to navigate life after high school, LIFT also provides learning opportunities for families to be knowledgeable about the pathway toward college and career readiness.

This year’s event will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at Tates Creek High School.

We will offer interactive sessions for students of all ages while parents and other caregivers can learn about the Every Student Succeeds Act, advocacy and financial aid. Parents can also explore our resource fair.
