Walk for Arc of Kentucky Set for Aug. 11

A fundraiser for The Arc of Kentucky – the state’s largest volunteer organization – is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 11 at Keeneland, Barn No. 2 at 4201 Versailles Road.

The Walk to Bridge the Gap to Success will include inflatables, a silent auction and other activities for people of all ages. Exhibitors and sponsors from across the state will have information about their agencies to share with families. UK’s 4pawsfor ability therapy dogs will also be on hand.

The event runs 9 a.m. to noon with the Walk starting at 10 a.m. Walk sponsorship opportunities are available. The fee is $20 per walker and includes a T-shirt. Exhibitors can purchase a booth for $95, $65 for non-profits.

Formed in 1955 by a small number of parents, The Arc is a grassroots organization dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and their families and caregivers.

The Arc supports current programs such as Self-Empowerment Network, Wings for Autism, Health & Fitness for All, special education support and resources, and the Best Practice Annual Conference.

The Arc advocates for rights for people with disabilities to participate and be included in all phases of community life and to help them make their own choices about where they will work and live.

“Our goal is to initiate and support local, state and national prevention efforts to reduce the incidence and the consequences of intellectual and developmental disabilities through research, advocacy, education and family support,” said Luke Brothers of The Arc.

“This is just a small part of what The Arc is about and who it serves. We encourage everyone to come out and support our individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”
